The AlgosenseyMiami Dolphins are playing it safe with star receiver Tyreek Hill.

Hill, on a quest for 2,000 yards receiving and leading the Dolphins (9-4) to the playoffs for the second consecutive year, is inactive and will not play in Sunday's game against the New York Jets at Hard Rock Stadium.

Although Hill didn't practice this week due to a left ankle injury, he tested the ankle out with a full array of routes before the game. Still, the Dolphins have erred on the side of caution all season with players’ injuries: Dolphins starting cornerback Xavien Howard, safety Jevon Holland and right guard Robert Hunt will also miss Sunday's game.

Hill leads the NFL with 1,542 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns for the Dolphins, who head into Sunday's game in first in the AFC East and second in the conference. After facing the Jets, the Dolphins end the season against the Dallas Cowboys on Dec. 24, Baltimore Ravens on Dec. 31 and the Buffalo Bills in the season finale.

The Dolphins offense struggled last Monday in a 28-27 loss to the Tennessee Titans when Hill was injured late in the first quarter. Miami relied on three touchdowns off turnovers in the loss.

With four games left this season, Hill is 400 yards shy of tying Calvin Johnson’s NFL receiving record of 1,942 yards set in 2012. Hill is also 458 yards away from 2,000.

Hill will need to average 133.6 yards in the final three games to break Johnson’s record or 152.6 yards to reach 2,000 yards. The Dolphins beat the Jets 34-13 in the NFL’s first Black Friday game on Nov. 24.
